The region's food industry is growing at a rapid, steady pace. After the 90s economic slowdown, the ASEAN region focused on trickling down prosperity and growing a middle class. Today, the streets of Bangkok, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur and other centers are filled with young, urban consumers with modern, western tastes.

QUALITY & SAFETY DRIVE DEMAND FOR U.S. FOOD INGREDIENTS - High Growth Markets Are Key To Success
American food ingredients continue to rack up impressive gains year after year, especially in developing nations. In 2008, exports in this area were $10.6 billion, an 18% increase over 2007. Food ingredients exported to the ASEAN region alone totaled $452 million - a 19% jump, with Thailand rising some 36%.
There are several reasons for this steady and impressive growth. The primary factor is quality. The US food ingredients industry has carved out an enviable reputation for offering the best and most reliable quality in all areas of ingredients. Another reason is safety, which is now of heightened concern following numerous cases of food contamination that have been reported around the world over the past year. A third benefit is the large variety of food products that the US industry offers – particularly in the area of “healthy” ingredients and functional foods.
In terms of regional growth, the US continues to focus on the developing markets in Asia, Latin America and Africa. Major product sectors here include: Fats & Oils, Shelled Nuts, Sweeteners, Breakfast Cereals, Oilseed, Flour Meal and Flavorings.
In spite of impressively growing markets, most Asian buyers are still not familiar with the wide variety and quality of US food ingredients – especially in innovative areas such as ‘health’. For this reason the United States will continue to be an avid supporter and exhibitor at Food Ingredients Asia – the most important exhibition of its type in the ASEAN Asian region.
Food Ingredients Asia 2009 provides a unique international platform for manufacturers to meet with customers, pursue leads and introduce new products at this busy international gathering. The United States has been an exhibitor since the show began in 2000 and the US Pavilion continues to be one of the most popular.
Mark it in red, white and blue on your calendar for September!
