Bangkok Port has acted as the major marine gateway to Thailand since it opened in 1951. The port, commonly known as Klong Toey Port, is situated on the left side of the Chao Phraya River, between km 26 and km 29 and was developed with the purpose of giving large sea-going ships direct access to Bangkok for the efficient transportation of goods. The port was constructed with a loan from the World Bank allowing for dredging of the sand bar, deepening of the river course and for the purchase of loading and unloading equipment. Bangkok Port is operated by the Port Authority of Thailand (PAT), which was established as an autonomous body under the supervision of the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

The port of Bangkok has experienced continuous growth since the 1950's and through further loans from the World Bank, expanded its facilities and substantially expanded to handle the increased traffic. In the early 1980's, it was estimated that Kloeng Toey facilitated 98% of imports entering Thailand, 60% of exports and 40% of coastal traffic. Strong economic growth in the 1980's severely congested Bangkok Port's handling capacity, despite improvements to its cargo handling service and checking, expanded storage space and the construction of new container yards outside the port.

The construction of Laem Chabang Port (LCB) became a necessity to meet the growing cargo demands of the country. Since LCB opened in 1991, Kloeng Toey's volume of cargo handled has steadily decreased to levels more suitable to its 'true' handling capacity.
LCB Port has capitalized on its ability to handle large ocean going vessels as a major weakness of Bangkok Port has been its limitation on vessel size and draft, which forced ships of more than 10,000 tons or an 8.5 meter draft to offload at the mouth of the Chao Phraya, 27 kilometers downstream of the main cargo facilities in Bangkok. Export cargo volumes handled at Bangkok Port have remained relatively steady, while import volumes have declined by more than 40% since 1995.
