Ta Phut Industrial Port was opened in 1992 as a further
extension of Thailand's eastern seaboard economic development
plan. Despite the existence of nearby deepwater ports in Laem
Chabang and Sriracha, the Map Ta Phut Port was planned with
a long-term target to provide shipping infrastructure as well
as a production base to support promoted industries in the region,
primarily the petrochemical, fertilizer and soda ash industries.

Map
Ta Phut Industrial Port differs from the other three deep-sea
ports in Thailand as only three berths are used for commercial
purposes and are operated by private operators. The
remaining berths are delegated to industries using the
port, which are located in the Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate.

These industries were responsible for the development
and construction of the berth as well as the handling equipment
used.
Map Ta Port specializes in the shipment of bulk
cargo, agricultural and mineral products, liquid cargo and ore
products with general cargo more likely to be shipped through
the nearby Laem Chabang or Sririacha ports. The port's operation
is overseen by the Industrial Estates Authority of Thailand
(IEAT) and is currently in Phase III of a three-stage development
plan designed to facilitate the efficient shipment of industrial
cargo to and from Thailand's growing eastern seaboard. Phase
III is focusing on expanding the port's capacity in shipping
liquid natural gas (LNG).
