The Akha hill tribe group cultivate rice, corn and—traditionally—opium, for their own use and to trade.

The Akha are famed for their Swing Ceremony, which takes place from mid August to mid September. The ceremony marks the passage of girls into womanhood, and is marked by several days of merriment and festivities.
