March 7, 2000
BANGKOK
(The Asian Wall Street Journal) - Nation
Multimedia Group PCL said its majority-owned Thai Portal Co. will launch
in June an Internet portal focusing on Thai exports and tourism.
Thai Portal's
chief executive, Thanachai Theerapatvong, told a news conference Monday
the company invested 300 million baht ($7.9 million) to set up the English-language
Web site Thailand.com - the biggest investment in an Internet portal by
a Thai company so far.
On the
same day, Thai Portal - which is 51%-owned by Nation Multimedia - signed
an agreement valued at 93 million baht with International Business Machines
Corp.'s Thailand unit to provide technology assistance and systems maintenance
for the Web site for at least three years. IBM Thailand's general manager,
Thanwa Laohasiriwong, said the agreement involves the most integrated information
technology service the company has ever provided in Thailand. Thai Portal
will provide content for the Web site.
"The
portal will not only provide information, but also facilitate electronic
business transactions where visitors can book their flights, hotels, or
order products from Thai companies linked to the site," Mr. Thanachai
said. Thailand.com will focus on small - and medium-sized companies, he
added.
