Multimedia Group's expansion drive starts on information superhighway
November 16, 1999
Nation
Multimedia Group has registered a new company as part of a radical
plan to consolidate its position as the leading content provider
in Southeast Asia.
The
group established Thai Portal Co., Ltd. last week. The company will
oversee NMG's internet vision for the new millennium and is confirmation
of the group's faith in an early economic recovery.
Sermsin
Samalapa, who founded real estate information service provider mrhome.com
and its call centre 1575, has been named president of the new company.
Mr
Samalapa said Thai Portal was preparing to launch two distinct web
portal services on the internet early next year.
One
portal will be aimed at the global market and offer up-to-the-minute
world news and trade information; the other will be geared towards
Thai communities with detailed coverage of local news and issues.
In
preparation for its global expansion commitment, Nation Multimedia
Group recently signed an exclusive alliance deal with Bridge, a
financial information service based in the US. The deal gives NMG
the rights to represent Bridge in Asia.
Users
of this service will have access to real-time quotes of share prices
from every major stock market, as well as relevant forex and portfolio
management information.
NMG's
two portals will also feature state-of-the-art community websites
such as pantip.com and offer a range of classified services such
as mrhome.com, e-commerce including an e-book venture in association
with Se-Ed Thailand.
NMG
Chairman Thanachai Theerapatvong expressed his confidence in the
Thai Portal investment, saying it would offer internet users a galaxy
of new information and e-commerce choices.
Mr
Theerapatvong said the investment NMG was making would allow it
to assume "a leading regional role" as an internet, broadcasting,
and publishing powerhouse early in the next century.
"By
capitalising on the dynamism of the information industry and the
global trend towards a knowledgeable society, we are looking at
the next millennium with optimism and excitement," he said.
