The
Department of Export Promotion (DEP) recently organized its
e-commerce promotion campaign "IT for Exporting: An Adaptive
Strategy Toward e-Commerce", to encourage Thai exporters
to use the Internet to promote exports worldwide. thailand.com/Meet
World Trade joined this program as an e-commerce provider
for Thai exporters of Group I (agricultural and food products,
stationery products, etc.). The program was organized on July
9, 2001 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, Bangkok.
The
program was split into two sessions. The morning session comprising
training and seminars by experts from the government and private
sectors, such as Dr. Tanong Bhitaya, an assistant of the prime
minister on the economy, who delivered a talk entitled "An
Adaptive Strategy Toward e-Commerce", Mr. Trin Tontasetti,
Managing Director of Internet Thailand Co., Ltd., who talked
on "Exporting and the New Economy", and a seminar
entitled "What Do Exporters get from e-Commerce?"
with five agents from authorized online e-commerce providers
for Thai exporters. The afternoon session comprised private
discussions between Thai exporters in each group of products
and their corresponding online e-commerce providers.

Dr. Adisai Bodharamik, Minister of Commerce, said in his opening
address, that information technology is today one of the driving
forces in every lifestyle. "The Internet, a fine tool for conducting
business and online payments, is an excellent channel of communication,
which presents fine opportunities to present Thai products to the
global market. It helps Thai exporters to create online trading
transactions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and reduces costs of
personnel, documentation, communications and investment. It also
encourages a higher value of exports." He also added that for
all 8,300 members of the DEP, only 12 percent have their own web
sites and about 45 percent have e-mail.
Dr.
Tanong Bhitaya, an assistant of the prime minister for the economy,
summarized in his lecture on "An Adaptive Strategy Toward e-Commerce",
that Thai exporters should introduce e-commerce trading to their
operations by owning their own web site, using online payment systems
and adjusting their technology to accommodate global trading.
