Costume
in the northeastern part of Thailand is heavily influenced by Lao
attire. Women traditionally wear a floor length tube-skirt of tie-dyed
'mudmee' silk, with an intricately woven, colorfully patterned length
of cloth over their shoulders. For formal occasions, women wrap
a richly embroidered 'sabai' over one shoulder, letting it hang
loosely at the front and back. The tube-skirt is richly patterned,
colorful and woven with gold thread.
Their
hair is gathered into a high bun and, for special occasions, wound
with gold chains of various sizes and patterns.
Men
wear tight-fitting, dark blue indigo-dyed shirts with three-quarter
length sleeves, tied at the waist with several pieces of cloth.
