Like
other regions of the country, the south has been influenced
to some extent by all of the Kingdoms and eras that have passed
through Thailand over the years. But because of its geographical
isolation from the rest of the country, and its proximity to
the east-west maritime trade routes, the south is perhaps more
unique than any other area of the Kingdom.
The predominantly Muslim south has received influences from
India and Ceylon, Malaysia, Java, and even Arabia. As a result,
the styles of the region's arts, be they costume, sculpture
or music, are quite distinctive. The south is particularly renowned
for its fabulous crafts, which to this day constitute the livelihood
of many of the region's people.
