Maenam
Beach (Hat Maenam)
On
the north coast of Samui, Maenam Beach is five km of appealing
golden sand. The beach is quiet and attracts mainly families
and couples. There are no touristy developments, and no noisy
bars and clubs yet. The old village was originally founded
by Hunanese immigrants. A Chinese temple at the beach near
the quay and some 75-year-old wooden Chinese shop-houses show
a very strong Chinese influence in the town. The town is smaller
and not as interesting as Bophut. Yet, it does have a comparable
charm of a very unique Samui village. All the accommodation
is directly on the beach and is much superior to what is available
in Bophut.
Located
in the middle of the beach, the village has two connecting
roads running down to a pier, a jumping off point for the
ferries to Ko Phangan amd Ko Tao. Most of restaurants, dive
shops and travel agents are concentrated in this area. Highway
4169 parallel to the beach is lined with supermarkets, restaurants,
clinics, stores, restaurants, bars, shops and travel agents
in concrete not wooden style shop-houses. The beach can be
reached easily by songtaew from the main pier of Nathon or
anywhere on the island as they run everywhere on Samui at
a cost of around150-200 baht.
