Ban
Prasat Archaelogical Site
This
site of tremendous archaeological significance is located
45 km north of the town of Nakorn Ratchasima. Considered by
most historians to be the oldest archaeological site in the
area, artifacts from this site attest to the existence of
an advanced, agricultural-ceramic society over 3000 years
old. In addition, many archaeologists believe that this society
farmed, weaved, domesticated animals, created advanced, colored
pottery and were even able to forge Bronze tools. Other excavated
layers at Ban Prasat provided evidence of several later societies,
including Mon, Dvaravati and Khmer. One particular structure,
Ku Than Prasat, is of particular interest, as it is evidence
of a culture in limbo and is believed by many to be a significant
transitional landmark linking the Mon kingdoms to the east
and the Khmer kingdoms to the west. Several of the excavation
sites at Ban Prasat are now open to the public, as is the
visitors' center, which boasts a fine collection of pottery
and human remains from the period. These are open from 8.30
am to 4.30 pm on Wednesday through Sunday.
Ban Prasat can be reached via Bus No. 1305 from Nakorn Ratchasima
to Phimai.
