Prasat
Hin Phimai National Historical Park
Of
all the historical sites in Nakorn Ratchasima, perhaps the
most impressive is this ancient Khmer shrine, which pre-dates
Angkor Wat in Siem Reap. It is estimated that construction
on this shrine began during the reign of Khmer King Jayavarman
V in the late 10th century and was finished in the early 11th
century, by King Suriyavarman I. During the height of the
Angkor Empire, this site was directly connected to Angkor
Wat by road. Prasat Hin Phimai is the largest sandstone shrine
in Thailand and stands in the middle of what was the ancient
city of Phimai. The main shrine is over 28 m in height and
is constructed of fine white sandstone. In addition, many
of the carvings on the walls and above the doorways are extremely
detailed and distinguished. Reconstruction and renovation
was recently completed and the shrine is now, more or less,
as it was nearly 1000 years ago. In addition to the shrine,
there are several other ruins, as well as numerous Khmer statues.
Phimai National Museum
This museum, recently constructed, offers a fine collection
of Isaan sculptures, including many of the finer pieces from
Prasat Hin Phimai and the surrounding areas. The most celebrated
piece is a sculpture of Khmer King Jayavarman VII, which dates
back over 900 years.
Prasat Hin Phimai National Historical Park is located 60 km
northeast of Nakorn Ratchasima and can be reached via bus
No. 1305. The trip costs 16 baht and takes a little over an
hour and a half.
