Birds
and Butterflies Watching
Kaeng
Krachan National Park is the largest national park in Thailand.
Its varied terrain supports vast virgin forests, groves and
an important watershed area. Many species of animal make the
park their home. It's easier to see birds, gibbons and macaques
here than at Khao Yai or the other large forest parks. Wildlife
is especially abundant in the central and western sections,
towards the Myanmar border.
About
400 bird species have been sighted in Kaeng Krachan, including
endangered species such as the hornbill, owls and woodpeckers.
Many northern montane birds like the great and blue-throated
barbets, and black-eared black shrike babbler have been recorded.
Additionally, a number of rainforest birds from peninsular
Thailand including the green broadbill, the ratchet-tailed
tree pie and red-billed malkoha, are also resident. Birds
normally found in the mountainous north at Doi Inthanon in
Chiang Mai or Um Pang in Tak have been spotted here. Two trails
for bird watchers have been set up, at km 1-17 and km 18-36.
Pa
La-U Waterfall is one of the best locations for seeing butterflies.
The best points are Ban Krang Camp at km 15-18 and the wet
areas near the camping point at Tor Thip Waterfall.
