Songkhla
Lake
Thale
Sap Songkhla, or Songkhla Lake, is Thailand's largest inland
body of water. Extending about 80 km from Phattalung province
in the north down to where it meets the Gulf of Thailand near
Songkhla, and about 20 km wide at the widest point. The upper
reaches are freshwater and it becomes more brackish in the
southern portions near the sea in Songkhla province. There
are several islands in the lake and two bird sanctuaries have
been established: Nok Nam Thale Noi in the north and Khu Khut
Water Fowl
Park further south. Formerly an abundant source of seafood
and especially the famous black tiger prawn, pollution and
overfishing, particularly involving the use of gillnets, have
taken a toll. Seasonal variations in water levels and salinity
have resulted in the evolution of a complex ecology which
supports mangrove forests, river dolphins and turtles, as
well as a great variety of waterfowl.
