Trekking
at Khao Sok National Park
The
national park has hiking trails for trekking into a rainforest
jungle which is one of Thailand's best preserved habitats
for tropical plants and wildlife. It is a home to tigers,
clouded leopards, Malaysian sun bears, elephants, gaur and
many other rare species. Bird watching is another interesting
activity in the sanctuary where you can observe over 70 bird
species. Several rare plants including Palm Lang Kao and Bua
Phud are to be found within the park. Bua Phud or rafflesia
flower blossoms every November until January. The trails lead
to caves where you can experience the natural formations of
beautiful stalactite and stalagmite. Another recommended activity
is to explore the unspoiled jungles on elephant back.
After
observing the flora and fauna, you can swim in a clear brook
in the middle of the park. Most visitors are keen to visit
the reservoir and nearby Ratchaphrapa Dam offering rafting
on Khlong Saeng. Another interesting activity in the park
is boating on the streams and in the lake. The highlighted
places include Sip Et Chan Waterfall with eleven spectacular
stages of fall, Tang Nam pool 6 kms from the park office,
Bang Hua Raed Waterfall 3 kms from the park office and Tan
Gloy Waterfall 9 kms from the park office.
The
park office is 1.3 kms off highway 401 (Surat Thani - Takuapa)
at Km 109. Dormitory and camping facilities are available
through advance booking for food and lodging. One can make
a reservation through the Forestry Department, tel +66 2 579
