Angkor Wat, Cambodia |
Angkor
Wat is an immense temple near the town of Siem Reap, Cambodia,
about 200 km from the Thai border town of Aranya Prathet.
Often considered to be one of the Wonders of the World, Angkor
Wat is one of the most popular destinations in Southeast Asia,
and extremely important both historically and religiously.
Angkor Wat was constructed over 800 years ago, and remains
in remarkably good condition despite abandonment and fire
during both the Vietnam War and various battles with the notorious
Khmer Rouge. Despite some minor damage, Angkor Wat stands
almost entirely intact, and is reputed as one of the most
significant historical sites in the world. The remains contain
a multitude of intricate carvings depicting ancient Hindu
stories, the quality of which far surpasses the most heralded
European cathedrals of the same period.
A Brief History of Angkor Wat
Angkor
Wat was constructed in the 12th century, during
the rule of Khmer King Suryvarman II, and served as a center
of the Khmer empire from its construction to 1431, when the
area was abandoned due to invasions from the Thais. This historical
marvel was first discovered by the western world only 140
years ago, when stumbled upon by French explorers. Since its
re-discovery, there has been a concerted restoration effort,
which continues up to the present day. The sheer size, scale,
and age of Angkor Wat make it one of the most significant
religious and historical sites of all time.
Angkor
Wat is a sizable compound, covering over 202 acres, and containing
five central shrines encircled by three galleries and a moat.
Long avenues connect the first and second galleries, both
of which are ornately decorated with meticulously detailed
religious carvings representative of Hindu cosmology. Enclosed
by the third gallery are the five shrines, connected by a
series of balconies. The walls of each individual shrine are
also filled with religious carvings in excellent condition,
and the decorations on the ceilings and doorways are well-preserved
evidence of an extremely advanced culture.
There
is a US $20.00 one-day entry fee, and three-day passes are
available for US $40.00.
