Golden
Mount
Fair
Every
November a fair is held at Wat Saket on Bangkok's imposing
78-meter 'Golden Mount'. On the full moon night, a candlelight
procession of pilgrims makes its way up the Golden Mount to
pay respects at the reliquary on top. On subsequent days,
a fair is held in the temple grounds with various shows and
entertainments, including 'likay' performances and folk dancing.
The
golden chedi of Wat Saket on top of the hill houses a relic
of the Buddha from India, originally presented to King Chulalongkorn
by the British Government. The shrine is seldom open for view,
but the climb to the top of the mount is worth it for the
sweeping views over the city. The temple at the foot of the
hill is one of the oldest in Bangkok, built during the reign
of King Rama I. Mural paintings inside the chapel depict the
defeat of the Mara demons by Mae Toranee (Mother Earth), the
punishment of the dead by the ruler of the underworld and
frescoes of the Ramakien.
Wat
Saket is located on Boriphat Road, not far from Ratchadamnoen
Road. The landmark Golden Mount, Bangkok's only hill (albeit
man-made) can be seen from all points in the city. In the
evenings, floodlights illuminate the golden chedi on top.
