The Phuket Vegetarian Festival
 |
A
noteworthy celebration, the Phuket Vegetarian Festival is
held annually from the 1st through the 9th nights of the 9th
Chinese lunar month, roughly around September or October,
to show gratitude to the gods and heavenly beings for protecting
Phuket and its people. First celebrated in 1825, the festival
was derived from the traditions of immigrant workers in the
19th century. Chinese residents wore white clothes during
the period and abstained from eating meat for ten days to
clean the body and soul.
Many
rites and rituals based on legendary beliefs are performed
including tests of devotion. For example, fire walking and
climbing of ladders with razor sharp steps are demonstrated
by those whose bodies become the temporary residences of powerful
gods. While in trances, they become unconscious of pain, running
skewers, hoses, spears, and even Chiang Mai umbrellas through
cheeks and tongues. Parades of worshippers carry Buddha images
through the streets while enduring the explosions of fireworks
all around. Ceremonies arranged at local Chinese temples are
attended by thousands of people.
