Lak Phra and Tak Bat Devo Festival
This
Buddhist festival is held annually on first day of the eleventh
waning moon (around October) at Muang district. It is a festival
celebrated by most Buddhists nationwide to celebrate the end
of the rainy season retreat for Buddhist monks.
In the morning
of the ceremonial day, people will gather to offer food to
the monks. The ceremony is called 'Tak Bat Devo' and commemorates
an auspicious event in Buddhist legend.
The
ceremony is known as 'Chak Phra' or 'Lak Phra' which means
the 'pulling of the Buddhist monks.' Revered Buddha images
from different temples in the area will be located in a long
parade of boats which will float along the river, so people
can make offerings to the Buddha. This event is usually held
concurrently with Tak Bat Devo festival. There will also be
a competition for the best-decorated boats participating in
the ceremony along with other cultural activities during the
event. Chak Phra is only organized in the southern provinces.
