By Car

From Bangkok, the trip to Kanchanaburi takes a couple of hours along the western highway, passing through Nakhon Pathom on the way. Kanchanaburi is about 130 km from the capital. It's possible to hire shared taxis and minivans in Bangkok from the back-packer area on Bangkok's Khao San Road. The cost varies around 100 baht per person, depending on the number of passengers.

By Bus

First-class air-conditioned buses leave for Kanchanaburi every 40 minutes from the Southern Bus Terminal on Borromrat Chonnanee Road. Buses depart from 5.30 am to 10.00 pm and the one-way fare is 68 baht. The trip takes about two hours. Ordinary non-air-conditioned buses make the trip every 20 minutes. The bus station in Kanchanaburi is located on Saeng Chuto Road, close to the local tourist office.

By Train

Ordinary trains to Kanchanaburi leave Bangkok Noi Station in Thonburi twice daily at 7.40 am and 1.50 pm. The journey takes just over two and a half hours. These trains also continue on to the Bridge on the River Khwae (7 minutes further on) and Namtok another two hours away. Trains from Kanchanaburi leave at 7.27 am and 10.20 am, arriving in Thonburi at 2.51 pm and 5.40 pm, respectively. Fares for the single trip are 28 baht for third class, 64 baht for second and 123 baht for first class. Usually, only third class carriages are available.

There are no trains to Kanchanaburi from Hua Lampong Station except special tours leaving on weekends and holidays. These trains leave at 6.30 am, arriving back in Bangkok at 7.45 pm. The trains make stops at Nakhon Pathom, the River Khwae Bridge, a stop for river rafting, the war museum and war cemeteries, and a limestone cave. Food and beverages are included. The price for adults is 450 baht, children 410 baht or with second-class air-conditioned cars, 550 baht for adults and 470 baht for children.
