The
Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTS) Sky Train has been built
to solve Bangkok’s traffic congestion problems. The system
opened to the public in December 1999 and so far has proved
very popular with Thais and visitors alike.
Currently,
the BTS system has two routes, the Sukhumvit Line and the
Silom Line, with a total distance of approximately 23.5 k.m.
It’s possible to change lines at Siam Square.
The Sukhumvit
Line starts in eastern Bangkok at Sukhumvit Soi 81 (On Nut
Station) and ends at the old Mor Chit Bus Terminal in the
north of the city (Mo Chit Station). It passes along Sukhumvit
Road, Ploenchit Road, Rama I Road, Phyathai Road, Victory
Monument and Phahonyothin Road.
The
Silom Line starts at the foot of King Taksin Bridge (Sathorn
Bridge) on the Bangkok-side of the river and ends east of
Banthat Thong Road near the National Stadium. From Sathon
Road, it proceeds north to Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra (the
junction with Klong Chongnonsee) where it turns east to join
Silom Road before running along Ratchadamri Road and Rama
I Road.
The
stations have two concourses, one providing ticketing facilities
and other passenger amenities as well as access to the system,
and the other being the platform for boarding the trains.
Two types of tickets are available:
single-journey tickets and stored-value tickets. Both tickets
are available at the ticket offices, located in every station.
Fares vary between 10 to 40 baht per person, depending on
the distance traveled.
Trains operate daily from
6.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m., with departures every three minutes.
Special services are provided for the disabled at all stations.
