From Bangkok Getting Around

Getting Around

Motorcar Hire

Fortunately, despite the growth in city center traffic in recent years, it is still relatively easy to get around the area by car. The reports in some guidebooks of traffic jams similar to Bangkok are exaggerations to say the least. Traffic only really starts to build up at certain hours - and even then, nothing like the congestion seen in the capital.

Whereas all manner of saloon cars are available for rent, it would probably be advisable to consider either a pick-up or 4x4 off road vehicle, such as a Jeep, if intending to go exploring deep into the countryside. This would be especially true during the rainy season.

There are numerous car rental agencies available, some better than others, and some best avoided altogether. The main well known companies such Avis, Hertz and Budget all have outlets at major hotels, within Chiang Mai city center and at the airport.

It is advisable to check carefully the insurance coverage that comes with the rental vehicle. Suffice to say that fully comprehensive or first class insurance is highly recommended. A valid international drivers license is also necessary and visitors are also usually required to leave their passports, as well as a cash or credit card deposit, for the duration of the rental period.
