If
the evening trains are taken from Bangkok, there is usually
enough daylight hours the next morning to enjoy the 1.5 km
climb to the tunnel through Khun Tan Hills.
A
railway station at the end of the tunnel, located at 578 m,
is the highest point on the whole State Railway of Thailand
(SRT). Passengers can then enjoy the magnificent scenery as
the train descends and travels through orchards and paddy
fields until it reaches Chiang Mai railway station.
It
is highly recommended that reservations are made well ahead
of the intended travel time, as trains can fill very quickly
– especially at weekends, official Thai holidays and moreover
during the high season.
