Getting Around

As in most major cities, there are a number of different options and means available to visitors for getting around Khon Kaen province, these include; motorcar hire, motorcycle hire, songthaews, Tuk Tuk, Samlor and bicycle hire.

Songthaew

A city Songthaew system circulates the main city streets. Songthaews can be very convenient as they can also be privately hired (with a driver) to take you wherever you want to go for a couple of hours or a full day and/or night of touring.

As with the Tuk Tuk drivers, bargaining is advised if private hire is required. Expect to pay around 700 - 1,000 baht for an eight or nine hour day.

Tuk Tuk

In heavy traffic and for short journeys, a ride in a Tuk Tuk is not only a convenient means of transport, but moreover an experience in itself.

Tuk Tuk are generally more expensive than Songthaews. Bargaining the fare price is essential before setting out on your journey, so as to avoid any misunderstanding later on!

Samlor

The Samlor is the original three-wheeled pedal trishaw. They are great for short distances and a relaxing way to see the sites, if time is not of the essence. Again, the fare should be bargained for before setting out.

Bicycle

A popular and eco-friendly way of getting around is simply by renting a bike. Mountain bikes have become increasingly popular in recent years and these, along with regular bicycles, can be rented at several places within the city. Particular care should be taken to ensure the roadworthiness of any bike rented.
