From Bangkok From Chiang Mai Getting Around

From Chiang Mai

From Chiang Mai, there are 3 different routes to Mae Hong Son

By the southern route (via Hod and Mae Sariang)
From Muang Chiang Mai, take highway no.108 passing Hang Dong, San Pa Tong, Chom Thong and Hod. Simply enter Mae Hong Son province at Mae Sariang district. Then you drive pass Mae La Noi, Khun Yuam, and now you are in Muang Mae Hong Son. It takes around 7-9 hours driving and the total distance is 349 km.

Please note: This route to Mae Hong Son passes through many high and dangerous slope mountains with 1,864 curves. Tourists are advised to travel with caution and only in daytime. As well as being safer, one can also enjoy beautiful scenery on both sides of the road.

By the northern route (via Mae Taeng and Pai)
With highway no.107 to the north, you will pass Mae Rim and Mae Taeng. At Mae Malai intersection, turn left to highway no.1095, passing Pong Duad, Mae Taeng and the entrance of Huai Nam Dang at Pai. From Kiew Lom (a scenic vantage point) at Pang Ma Pha, keep driving until getting to Muang Mae Hong Son. It takes 7-8 hours to drive and the distance is 245 km.

Please note: The road conditions generally involve quite high slopes whilst thelanes are not as wide and easy to drive as highway no.108. Travelers should be very careful not to drive over the speed limit.

By Mae Chaem - Khun Yuam route
From Mae Chaem, take highway no.1263 passing Ban Na Chon, Pang Um, Doi Mai U-Kho and Khun Yuam. It takes approximately 2.5 - 3 hours. Then, take highway no.108 ahead to Mae Hong Son. The construction of Mae Chaem - Khun Yuam route was just finished in late 1999.

There is not much accommodation or support available yet (only two gas stations along the way and no bus service). Hence, traveling at night is not advised. However, the route is one of the most beautiful in the north. A short detour to visit Buatong field is also recommended.
