Airline Information
Air travel
in Thailand is relatively convenient and visitors are offered
a choice of domestic airlines that better serve your needs
to the desired destinations. Currently, there are four airlines
offering domestic flights around Thailand. They include Thai
Airways International (THAI), Angel Air, Bangkok Airways and
PB Air.
So far, THAI
offers the most comprehensive domestic air services covering
almost all domestic airports. But with the government’s liberalization
policy for domestic air services, smaller airlines now have
a better opportunity to compete. More domestic flights are
soon to be added, except for the Bangkok-Hat Yai and Bangkok-Phuket
routes, which are still monopolized by THAI.
Most airlines
are also looking for opportunities to expand their services
from Thailand to the emerging destinations nearby. Their expansion
plans are in response to the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s
policy to promote Thailand as the hub for the Mekong sub-region.
For example,
THAI now operates flights to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh and Danang
in Vietnam. Bangkok Airways has direct flights to Siam Riep
in Cambodia and is looking to expand to Luang Prabang in Laos.
Angel Air currently has direct flights from Chiang Rai to
Chengdu in China and Bangkok to Luang Prabang. It is looking
to expand its services to Pagan and Mandalay in Myanmar. PB
Air, on the other hand, will emphasize routes connecting southern
Thailand to Malaysia and Indonesia.
