The longest-established
national carrier, THAI provides international flights to major
destinations all over the world. The carrier also provides
the most domestic air services, covering most of the 28 domestic
airports nationwide. THAI is currently facing tougher competition
as a result of the government’s open-sky policy, which gives
greater opportunities for small airlines to offer services
on the same routes.

A privately
owned carrier, Bangkok Airways is the second leading domestic
air service. It operates five domestic routes: Bangkok-Samui-Bangkok,
Bangkok-Ranong-Bangkok, Bangkok-Phuket-Samui, U Taphao (Pattaya)-Samui-U
Taphao, and Bangkok-Sukhothai-Chiang Mai. Currently, the airline
provides up to 16 round trips daily from Bangkok to Samui.
Plans are underway to offer more flights to other domestic
destinations.

The second national carrier,
Angel Air is owned and operated by a group of private entrepreneurs.
Currently, Angel Air flies five major routes: Bangkok-Chiang
Rai, Bangkok-Chiang Mai, Bangkok-Phuket, Bangkok-Udon Thani
and Udon Thani-Chiang Mai. On international routes, it operates
flights to Singapore and Chengdu in southern China.
According
to the company’s policy, Angel Air plans to operate domestic
routes linking regional destinations and also between second-tier
destinations which have good potential for tourism. That includes
links to nearby destinations in southern China and the Mekong
countries.

Thailand’s newest airline,
PB Air is owned and operated by beer tycoon Piya Bhirompakdi
who has diversified from brewing into the airline industry.
It currently operates four major routes: Bangkok-Roi Et, Chiang
Mai-Roi Et, Bangkok-Krabi, and Bangkok-Chumporn.
