far the most dominating women's golfer of the 1990's, Annika
Sorenstam first experienced success at the amateur level, winning
the World Amateur title in 1992, as well as seven collegiate
titles and one NCAA championship. In 1993 Sorenstam joined the
WPG European Tour, and was named Rookie of the Year.
In
1994 Sorenstam joined the LPGA Tour, and had an immediate
impact. In her first year on the tour, Sorenstam earned Rolex
Rookie of the Year honors, becoming only the second non-US
citizen to accomplish the feat. The following year Sorenstam
earned Rolex Player of the Year and Vare Trophy honors, capturing
three victories and one major championship at the US Women's
Open.
1996
saw Sorenstam continue on her winning ways, as she collected
wins in two more tournaments, and defended her US Women's
Open title. For the second consecutive year, Sorenstam was
awarded the Vare Trophy.
Since
establishing herself on the tour, Sorenstam never looked back,
winning Rolex Player of the Year honors on two more occasions
(1997,1998) as well as back-to-back Vare Trophies. Sorenstam
also has eclipsed the million dollar mark each of the last
three seasons, and is currently second on the money list with
$1,404, 948 in winnings.
