Phra Mahathat Temple

Wat Phra MahathatBuilt by King Ramesuan in the 14th century, Wat Mahathat is located at the center of the old town, on the corner of Chi Kun and Naresuan Roads. Burmese invaders largely destroyed the temple and its once lofty pagoda.

An excavation by the Fine Arts Department in 1956 unearthed a buried chest beneath the rubble of the pagoda, containing a gold casket with a relic of the Lord Buddha, a number of gold Buddha images, and other valuable artifacts in gold, ruby and crystal. The finds are now housed in the National Museum in Bangkok.
