Phra Mongkhon Bophit Temple

Wat Phra Mongkhon BophitPhra Mongkhon Bophit is one of the country's largest cast bronze images, dating back to the 15th century. It was originally situated close to the Grand (Ancient) Palace but was relocated to its current site to the west during the reign of King Songtham.

A 'viharn', or sanctuary, was later built to shelter the image but this was completely destroyed by Burmese invaders in 1767. The image also was badly damaged. The present viharn is a 20th century addition, lacking in the beautiful craftsmanship of earlier versions.

The area to the east of the sanctuary was the former royal cremation ground or Sanam Luang, similar to the present-day Phramane Ground in Bangkok.

Wat Phra Mongkhon Bophit is located off Klong Tho Road, across the street from the Ayutthaya Historical Park Office and close to Wat Phra Si Sanphet.
