Phukhao Thong Temple

Wat Phukhao ThongLiterally translated as 'Golden Mount Pagoda', Chedi Phukhao Thong is an 80-meter tall stupa located on Ayutthaya's northern outskirts. The temple is thought to have been built in the Mon style by King Burengnong of Burma to commemorate the Burmese victory in the 1569 invasion of Ayutthaya. When King Naresuan restored Ayutthaya's independence in 1584, the pagoda was remodeled in the Thai style. In 1956, the government placed a 2.5 kg golden ball on top of the pagoda to celebrate the 2,500th anniversary of the Buddhist religion.
