The
Kavila Monument
The
Kavila monument stands in front of the Thai army barracks
on the banks of the Ping River in Chiang Mai. Within the barracks
is housed a small museum also named after Kavila. The monument
was erected to honor and pay tribute to the famous Chiang
Mai ruler who is acknowledged as having defeated the Burmese
with the aid of King Taksin of Siam in 1775.
It
is understood that Kavila not only drove the Burmese from
the provincial capital Chiang Mai, but went on to expel them
from much of the rest of the Lanna kingdom as well. Kavila
was made king from 1781 and ruled Chiang Mai until 1813.
