Wat
Phra Borammathat Si Chom Thong Worawihan
Not
to be mistaken for the Wat Phra Borommathat Doi Suthep on
Doi Suthep Mountain, Wat Phra Borammathat Si Chom Thong Worawihan
is located on the Chiang Mai to Hot Road about 58 km from
the provincial capital.
The
origins of the wat go back as far as the 8th century when
the highly revered Phra Borammathat Si Chom Thong holy relic
was first discovered. The holy relic has been housed in the
wat's wihan building since 1451, when the original wihan was
first built. The present day wihan was built in 1817 and is
particularly noteworthy for its highly decorative wood carving
features.
Within
the wihan is a miniature 'mondop' which contains the revered
holy Buddha relic. The tiny mondop is shaped like a chedi
and decorated with golden stucco. The wihan building has the
atmosphere of a museum, as there are a number of elephant
tusks and other artifacts on display surrounding the revered
mondop.
On
special occasions, the holy relic is removed from the mondop
and displayed to visitors, especially on the main Buddhist
holidays.
