Wat Phra That Chom Kitti

Wat Phra That Chom Kitti is situated in the small ancient historical town of Chiang Saen, a former principality of the kingdom of Lanna. It is located on a small hill about 2.5 km north of the old city ramparts, next door to the remains of Wat Chom Chang.

The origins of both these wats are not entirely clear, though most experts agree they were probably built before the founding of the kingdom circ. 10th century. The gold chedi of Wat Phra That Chom Kitti is currently being restored though there is unfortunately little else to save.

Being on a hill means there are some fine views from the wat of Chiang Saen town, the Mekong River and neighbouring Laos. The wat's remains are reached on foot by stairs that start from the old city walls.
