Wat Phra Singh

Wat Phra Singh is an important teaching monastery situated on Singha Klai Road. It is a sister temple to a wat of the same name in Chiang Mai and yet another wat that houses a copy of a famous Buddha image - the Phra Singh Buddha image of Chiang Mai.

The wat has been restored too many times to allow accurate dating. However, documents suggest that it was built in the 15th century or earlier - possibly by King Mahaproma. Legend holds that an important Theravada image was once located here.

The original buildings are fine examples of classic Lanna religious architecture, with their low sweeping roofs. Below the windows of the bot there are some finely wrought animal medallions. The interior of the bot is decorated with some gaudy but vivacious murals. Within the complex grounds are Bodhi trees surrounded by unusual Buddha images in each of the principal mudras.
