Wang Wiwegaram Temple

Wang Wiwegaram Temple is located just to the north of Sangkhla Buri town, overlooking the huge Khao Laem reservoir. Situated on a hillside, the temple enjoys sweeping views over the reservoir and the rivers that pour into it.

The unique construction of this temple combines Thai, Indian, and Burmese Buddhist architectural styles. Wat Wang Wiwegaram is well known and respected not only by the Thai people but also by many local tribal people, including Mon, Karen and Burmese. The temple is also known as Wat Mon since most of the monks there are ethnic Mon. A tall and much-revered stupa, 'Chedi Luang Phaw Uttama', is the centerpiece of the temple. The gold-capped stupa is named after one highly respected monk in this region.

Just across the road from the compound is a new Mon temple, with stainless steel-plated pillars, heavy carved wooden doors and marble banisters. It has been rumored that the money used to pay for this modern viharn was collected by rebel soldiers on goods smuggled through their territory.
