Phra That Kham Kaen

Phra That Kham KaenAbout 30 kms northeast of Khon Kaen is the Jediyaphum Temple, home of Phra That Kham Kaen. According to local legend, several hundred years ago a that (reliquary sputa) was constructed over a tamarind tree stump. The tree, which had been dead for years, miraculously came to life after nine enlightened monks carrying Buddha relics to Phra That Phanom (in today's Nakhon Phanom Province) camped overnight at the site. Unfortunately, there was no space available at That Phanom for more relics, and the contingent of monks enshrined the relics at Phra That Kham Kaen (Tamarind Heartwood Reliquary). A town was developed near the temple, and although abandoned several times, eventually became the modern day Khon Kaen.
