Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu

Phra That Doi Kong MuSituated just west of the town atop a hill known as Doi Kong Mu, stands Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu, a temple that boasts two extraordinary white pagodas (chedis). Built in the 19th century by the first King of Mae Hong Son, Phraya Singhanatracha, the general structure and layout of this temple and its compounds bears the signature of Burmese influence.

The white pagodas are adorned with gilded crowns and bound by splendid stuccowork of fabled animals. Enshrined in these two chedis are believed to be the ashes of revered monks from Shan State of Burma. The sanctuary also is home to a standing Buddha image, and a viharn, also constructed in Shan-style with a tiered roof. From the summit of the hill, visitors are treated to an outstanding view of the misty surroundings with the city of Mae Hong Son in the background.
