Phrathat Bangphuan

This ancient pagoda, located along the Nong-Khai - Tha Bo Road, just 22 km from the town, is one of the most revered in the region, and is reputed to contain relics of the Buddha. Similar to Phra Pathom Chedi, in Nakorn Pathom, there is a small Indian stupa inside of the pagoda, which historians believe is over a thousand years old. The exterior pagoda, originally built in 1559 by King Jayachettha of Chanthaburi, was renovated in 1978, and is over 34m high. In addition, there are several ancient Lao pagodas, as well as some partially preserved Buddha images.

Phrathat Bangphuan can be reached from Nong Khai via bus or songthaew bound for Sri Chiang Mai, for a fee of about 12 baht.
