Wat Pho Chai

Enclosed in this restored, and somewhat extravagant temple is the venerated Luang Pho Phra Sai, a golden, ruby-studded Buddha image with a magnificent history. A relic of the ancient Lao civilization of Lan Xang, this golden Buddha was taken by Prince Chakri, who later became Rama I, during the first Thai incursion into Laos. According to legend, during transport the Luang Pho Phra Sai fell into the Mekong River, and was feared lost. The Buddha image, however, later miraculously re-surfaced, and was re-located to Wat Pho Chai. In addition to this magnificent Buddha, Wat Pho Chai also offers several impressive naga statues, and two large, stone lions.

Wat Pho Chai is located in the town of Nong Khai, on highway 212, and is a must see for any visitor to Nong Khai.
