Wat Matchimawat

Wat MatchimawatThe temple complex is more than 400 years old, and is the largest in Songkhla. Wat Matchimawat was built during the reigns of Rama III and Rama IV when Songkhla was an important provincial settlement ruled by the Chakri dynasty then newly established in Bangkok. The main sanctuary is similar to Wat Pra Keo in Bangkok and contains murals and frescoes and the outer portions feature bas reliefs imported from China depicting figures from Chinese mythology. Nearby on the grounds is a small, dark museum with an eclectic collection of poorly labeled Buddha images, votive tablets, ceramics and artifacts discovered in southern Thailand.
