12
km from the modern city, along highway 12, are the ruins of
the Thailand's Great Kingdom-Sukhothai. During the 13th and
14th centuries, this ancient city served as the capital of
the first independent Thai state, and at the peak of its power,
was one of the most advanced civilizations in the world. Recently,
the ruins of this great city have been preserved and restored
by the Fine Arts Department of Thailand, along with the cooperation
of UNESCO, which has designated this once-glorious capital,
together with its resplendent surrounding compounds, as a
World Heritage Site.
