km from the old town on Sukhothai-Tak highway, Sukhothai Historical
Site is one of
Thailand's national symbols and offers many fine examples
of the regions cultural heritage. With a restoration plan
launched by the Fine Arts Department of Thailand in 1960,
together with cooperation from UNESCO, the ruins of Sukhothai
have been carefully preserved, restored and rebuilt. In addition,
many artifacts from the site have been moved to an exhibit
in Ramkhamhaeng National Museum.
Sukhothai
historical park is open daily from 8.30am to 4.30pm, for an
entrance fee of about 20 baht. The whole 70 sq km complex
consists of 193 ruined sites, including: the walls of the
old city, the Royal Palace and Wat Mahathat, the Ramkhamhaeng
National Museum, the Ramkhamhaeng Monument, Wat Si Sawai,
Wat Traphang Ngoen, Wat Traphang Thong, Wat Chana Songkhram,
Wat Sa Si, Wat Mai and San Ta Pha Daeng (Deity Shrine).
