The Ramkhamhaeng National Museum

For first-time visitors to Sukhothai, a good place to start to explore this enormous historical park is the Ramkhamhaeng National Museum. Founded in 1960 and opened on January 25, 1964, the Ramkhamhaeng National Museum holds an impressive collection of art objects uncovered in Sukhothai and nearby provinces.

This collection includes pieces from the Sukhothai and Ayutthayan periods, and even some pieces dating back to the Khmers. Two of the most cherished pieces in the collection are a bronze statue of the walking Buddha, and a copy of King Ramkhamhaeng's stela inscription.

The statue of the walking Buddha is the only example of such sculpture in Thailand, and the stone inscription, which dates back to 1283, is King Ramkhamhaeng's autobiography as well as the history of the Sukhothai Kingdom during his reign.

The museum is open daily except Monday, Tuesday and official holidays, from 9.00am to noon and from 1.00pm to 4.00pm. The fee is 30 baht. For further information, call +66 55 612-167.
