Wat
Phra Si Rattana Mahathat
Wat
Phra Si Rattana Mahathat is one of the most beautiful temples
in Chalieng. It lies about 3 km to the south of the old city
of Si Satchanalai in a picturesque bank of the Yom River.
A huge laterite stupa (prang) on a square pedestal probably
dates back to the mid 15th century (during the reign of King
Boromtrailoknat) marks the center of this monastery.
In
front of the stupa, there is an immense seated Buddha image
dominated a ruined viharn which retains the canted columns.
Among the ruins are a standing Buddha half-embedded in the
ground and a walking Buddha statue in high-relief fine stucco.
This sanctuary is significant in presenting the early Sukhothai
artistic elements reflecting the Khmer influence, for example,
the huge round columns around the compound and the fine stucco
portraying the four faces of Hindu God, which were distinctive
styles of the Khmer art in late 12th century. In addition,
this wat is sometimes called "Phra Borommathat Muang
Chaliang Temple" or "Wat Phra Prang" as well.
