Phra
Boromathat Chaiya
Wat
Phra Boromathat Chaiya is a restored pagoda housing Lord Budda
relics. It is located in Amphoe Chaiya, 54 km north of the
provincial capital.
Constructed
over 1,500 years ago, the ancient pagoda in Mahayana Buddhist
style is a fine example of Srivijiya architecture. The highly
respected chedi also resembles the same style as Srivijiya
pagodas in central Java.
The pagoda is shaped as a high stack facing the east. It is
decorated with elaborate boxes having the images of Kala or
a peacock, which is viewed as a symbol of the sun, Erawan
or an elephant, Indra and the Buddha.
In
the courtyard surrounding the revered pagoda there are several
pieces of sculpture dating from the Srivijiya period. A two-sided
yoni or the pedestal shaped as a uterus is holding a Shivalingam,
a phallic emblem of god Shiva. Rishis or hermits, wandering
holy men, perform yoga. The pagoda is also encompassed with
small-sized stupas and the cloister housing tremendously large
ancient Buddha images in four corners.
