Meeting people
"sawut
dee khrap/ka", or
is
a general greeting which can be used regardless of the time
of day. In informal spoken Thai it is often abbreviated to
"wat dee". This expression is also used when saying
goodbye. "sawut dee" means that you wish the listeners
happiness and well being. This phrase is derives from Sanskrit
language.
It is accompanied by a gesture of respect called "wai"
when you put the palms together at a level between the middle
of the eyebrows to the chest. The level of the palms depends
on how much you respect the person and how polite you are.
The Thai normally perform it slowly and beautifully. However,
if you are a tourist for a short period, there is no need
to bother with it. Thai people are very kind and they don't
mind at all.

The
women's pronoun for "I" is "chan",
shortened from "di-chan", with the polite ending
"ka". The men's pronoun is "phom"
with the polite ending "khrap". |
