Khao
Laem Dam
The
Khao Laem Dam was built across the River Khwae Noi in 1983,
creating the huge Khao Laem reservoir and submerging an entire
village at Somprasop, at the opposite end of the lake. The
hydroelectric dam, 1,019 meters long and 92 meters high, is
located about 165 km northwest of the provincial capital,
and 6 km from nearby Thong Pha Phum.
Khao
Laem Reservoir, which extends more than 40 km northwest into
Sangkhla Buri District, can be explored by long-tailed boat
or canoe. Boating around the lake provides an opportunity
to see some of the bird life in the area or just to enjoy
some peace and tranquility. A few resorts with raft-houses
can be found in the vicinity of the dam.
Thong
Pha Phum District has several attractive waterfalls and other
attractions, all easily reached from the main highway. The
roadside Kroeng Krawia Waterfall, 32 km north of the town,
cascades over a limestone rock face under shady trees. Dai
Chong Thong Waterfall, 2 km along the road from Kroeng Krawia
Waterfall and a further 6 km off to the left, is a large waterfall,
cascading down towards the Khao Laem Dam. The huge Pha Tat
Waterfall, not far from a nearby national park, is situated
close to the road at Km 105 on Route 323. Two km further along
the highway at Km 107 is the Hin Dat Hot Spring, discovered
by a Japanese soldier in World War II. Visitors can bathe
in the pond at the hot spring.
Buses
for Thong Pha Phum leave Kanchanaburi every half hour between
6.45 am and 6.00 pm. Buses for Sangkhlaburi also drop off
passengers at Thong Pha Phum.
