Khao
Chamao - Khao Wong National Park
This
National Park was the last refuge for elephants, tigers and
other large wild mammals who were forced to retreat as the
surrounding areas became populated and the land was cleared
for cultivation. Today only some rare species of gibbons and
bats remain, along with a large number of exceptional bird
species. The park covers two once inaccessible mountains straddling
the border between Rayong and Chantaburi provinces. The 84
sq km of forest has a number of attractions, including waterfalls,
nature trails, a camp site and a visitor center. One of the
waterfalls, Nam Tok Khao Chamao, has eight tiers and can be
reached on one of the hiking trails. Another waterfall, Nam
Tok Klong Pla Kang, was only discovered relatively recently
and is under study by the tourism authorities to see if it
can be sustainably developed for tourism. Another trail leads
to the summit of Khao Chamao, 1,028 m above sea level, but
requires an overnight stay in the jungle.
The
Khao Wong National Park has more than 80 impressive caves
though not all are open for exploration by visiting tourists.
It is located about 20 km from Khao Chamao National Park,
and can be difficult to reach during the rainy season because
of poor road conditions.
