Khao Noi

a view from Tang Kuan MountainA short walk from Samila Beach is the small hill known as Khao Noi (meaning 'small hill') which has a seldom used fitness park at the crest and an old chedi where you can get a good view of the city and nearby islands in Songkhla Lake. At the bottom of the hill are tennis courts and a number of food stalls. There is also a small but well tended topiary garden with hedges trimmed into the shapes of animals. A large troop of wild monkeys chase each other around the slopes.

Khao Tang Kuan

the temple's chedi at Tang Kuan MountainThis hill lies next to Khao Noi and if you climb the 305 steps of the stairway off Rachadamnoen Road you can visit a Thavaravadee style chedi which was built during the Nakhon Si Thammarat era and restored during the reign of Rama IV. The temple is the scene of several important religious festivals each year. There is also a royal pavillion nearby dating from 1888, and the Pak Nam Laem Sai Fort, also from the 19th century. Like Khao Noi the hilltop has a panoramic view of Songkhla.
